Voice being transmit over the internet since 1973. Since that time this VoIP already being subjected. And these technology already available early in 1980's. Since 1996 a shrink-wrapped software product called VocalTec Internet Phone gives VoIP along with extra features such as voice mail and user ID for better communications.
But this technology can't be use by public network communication. Its only can be use by VocalTec phone user only. So there will be limited communication occur. After that these technology being develop to softswitch where these technology replacing traditional hardware telephone switches by serving as gateways between telephone networks. In this case there will be no gap between phone user. All the phone user can be communicate widely.
There are cirtain history about VoIP industry in US where its growing by 24.3% in 2008 to $3.19 billion. And they are axpected to rise by 21.2% in 2008 to 16.6 million.
